How to Ignite Your Awesomeness!
Discover Your Soul’s Calling: Ignite Your Potential!
We often expect ourselves to know our true purpose or mission in life. Yet, even for those who know their genuine calling early on, distractions, expectations, and life necessities can get in the way. Sometimes that deep yearning, a strong knowing from the soul, just cannot be ignored. Yet it is not always easy to break out of the mold, listen to your inner voice, and set out on a journey of your own. We are joined by a fascinating expert who will help you discover and ignite the joy, passion, and infinite possibilities that are waiting just for you.
We will focus on this audience’s real-life questions. “My life looks good on the outside, but I am dying on the inside. I work in a field I do not like. I make good money, but it is not my dream career. What I really want to do pays far less and would not support my current lifestyle. A big change would disappoint my husband and would make my parents furious. They would tell me I am wasting my education and my life, but I am just not happy. Any advice for me?” With that question as the focus of this episode, I am Dr. Carla Manly, and this is Imperfect Love.

I am delighted to be joined by a fascinating expert, Dr. Victoria Rader. Dr. Victoria is a healer, guide, and spiritual coach. Welcome to the show, Dr. Victoria. It is such a delight to have you with us.
Thank you so much, Dr. Carla. What a fantastic opportunity and the peaceful flow that you have established here. If you keep talking, I just might fall asleep and go to a gorgeous lull-o-land. So much peace and intention here. Thank you for having me.
Thank you for joining us. I feel the same with you that there is a nice groundedness, yet a deep passion within you. Thank you for sharing your time and your expertise. Before we launch into responding to this audience’s beautiful and poignant question, would you tell our audiences just a little bit about what makes you, you?
What makes me, me is me. I am going to play with that because it happens to be my everything. My everything sub-brand is me, little M, big E. What makes me me is what makes you me as well, which is mortal matter that manifests materially, that gets to surrender to eternal energy, the essence of expansion. What really makes me me is the infinite passion of teaching this and living it, starting here, and then expanding it to every person. I really believe that is who I am.
That is a beautiful response. One thing I have not heard anything like before. The way you phrase it reminds me of physics, where life, we are all just going into more, and greater chaos, so to speak, rather than our greater possibility depending on how you look at it. I love that introduction to you. Thank you. Now I have a question. Have you always known your soul’s calling, your mission in life, or was it something that came over time?
I believe I have always known. I just have not always known that I know. It is true for everybody.
I love that you have always known, but you did not know that you knew. Thank you. This is really beautiful. I do have to say, I do not often think about it. Sometimes I will recall in my childhood, I really knew deeply that writing and being a psychotherapist, before I knew what a psychotherapist was, I knew that that was my soul’s calling. It was extinguished by my family for various reasons. I was being prompted to go into a career in law, and this and that, and being a psychologist was not good enough, that sort of thing.
My soul, it just reminds me I was three years old when I was picking up a pen and writing, pencil and writing little scraps of poetry, and looking at the comics and seeing Lucy in Charlie Brown, who is not the world’s greatest psychotherapist, but that, for some reason, having like a little house where I could put a shingle and help people. I knew it, but then I learned not to know it. It came back so strongly that eventually I, too, had to break out of the mold and do what I needed to do, what I really wanted to do.
I really agree with you. I know there are a lot of other people out there, Joseph Campbell, some of the really great psychotherapists, researchers, and believers in soul, who really believed in this idea that we all have a calling and we know it, but it is extinguished for various reasons. That is what the audience is writing about. It sounds like part of them. Do not know what this other profession is, but it is something that I have run into in my private practice, where people often go on a path, engineering, a medical path, whatever the path might be.
That is where they stay because it makes money, because a partner wants them to stay there, family wants them to stay there, or they simply cannot see another way out, or do not know where to go. I am super excited to respond to this audience’s question, because I think it will help so many people. How did you find out what you knew but did not know?
I also want to simplify something because very often you can waste your life energy and live towards your purpose, because you are looking for it. I would say it is wonderful for somebody who is like the question, who thinks they know what it is that is pulling them. I find that over 80% of people do not, and then they think something is wrong with them, and they are like, “I do not know what my purpose in life is.” That is an even more dangerous mug to get into. I just wanted to say that I want to simplify it to everybody in such a primitive yet true and powerful way.
We all have one purpose. That purpose is to love to our highest capacity. Period. The calling of the soul is how we get to do it. We do not get to embark on a calling or even hear it until we give ourselves permission to remember our purpose, which is to simply love. What happens for a lot of us, the receptors of receiving and perceiving love have been broken, have been blocked, have been misused and abused. We are weary of love. As long as we are wary about love, we are not a full vessel to receive the energy that then, when it flows through us, moves us in a direction of purpose.
Step number one is, no matter how brilliant and clear you are on your purpose, and you think it is out of your sight, or if you’re completely lost and you’re like, “This is not even for me because I have no idea what my purpose is,” this very moment, what is the most loving thing you can do for you? That would also be the most loving thing for everyone around you, because the greatest lie out there is that there is self-love and others’ love.
Love is love. If love has to choose, it is no longer love. It is either pleasing or abusive. There you have it. We start with learning to love, to receive, perceive, and live from love. For that audience who says, “I hate my job,” find one thing you love about it. What is the one thing you absolutely freaking love about the job you hate so much? The second you give yourself permission to love what is, you open the door to what could be as your much greater purpose.
The calling of the soul is how we express our purpose. We cannot embark on that calling until we give ourselves permission to remember our true purpose, which is simply to love. Share on X
Thank you. That is a lot. It is perfect. It is perfect because the reason I am saying it is a lot is that I am taking in a lot. I am taking in a lot of your energy. I am taking in your words. I am also processing your words. It is like I am working on 3 or 4 different levels, and it is such important material that you just gave that I would rather launch straight into responding to the audience’s question. I would really like to slow it down and process it with you. Going back to the piece where you say the first thing is that we must find love and allow love in.
Everyone, if this sounds foreign, I will give you a really quick example of it. I walk every morning, and I try to go as early as possible so there is more stillness. I see very few people, but someone who is new to that path, and I have seen him a few times with his daughter. He was on his own that morning, and he has an adult daughter. I just paused, and I said, “I just want to tell you, you just have such beautiful energy.” He paused and got this radiant smile, because we were greeting each other every morning. He got this radiant smile and said, “Thank you. God bless you.”
At first, I was a little taken aback. I have not had somebody, God bless me, in a long time, unless I sneeze. When I opened my soul to it, my heart to it, I just felt flooded and tingles of this beautiful energy from him to me and me back. Maybe I was the one who was initiated by seeing his beautiful energy. Either way, little moments like that, of course, I got all these chills. I was like, “What is this?” It was love. It was not, of course, romantic love. It was pure love. One might call it whatever label somebody wants to give to it. Philos, whatever you might call it, is still this energy that we can all experience.
We often experience it in a spiritual setting, sometimes in church, sometimes with a romantic partner, sometimes giving a friend a hug or a child a hug, sometimes hugging a pet, or being with. These are experiences of love. Dr. Victoria, please push back in any way you would like to. To me, these are love experiences that are waiting all around us, but we have to lower our defenses. We have to let that love in and allow ourselves to feel it and sometimes exchange it. What do you think of what I just said as an example?
It is a fantastic example. In that example, you kept using the word energy, defining love as energy. I work with quantum mechanics. In my work, I define love as life originating, vibrant emotion, or energy in motion. The simplest definition, I love Einstein, who says, “Make things as simple as possible, but not simpler.” I always say, “How can I make it as simple as possible, but not simpler?” Simplifying love, I arrived at that exact understanding that you have given such a beautiful example for, which is that love is the energy, which is emotion, is simply energy in motion.
Love is the energy that amplifies, magnifies, and creates life. When a person who is making you feel small says, “I do it because I love you,” they are deceiving you, and you might be believing them. Love grows life. Anything in your life that grows and expands you is love. Anything that diminishes and shrinks you is absence. Which is, if we go to the very origin of the audience’s question, who said, “I am dying at work.” Why is he or she dying at work? It’s because there is no love. Life, originating vibrant emotion or energy in motion, is missing.

Mistakenly, we can say it is because of the environment and because it is not a dream job. Now we have become a victim of the environment instead of saying, “Wait a minute, if the only thing that is missing is the vibrant life, I get to bring that. I get to be the love I am looking for.” When we show up in the most restrictive environment with the purpose of love, which is how do I grow the life of every person, of every project, of every circumstance within my human capacity, some days much better than others, so be it. When we become that messenger of love, phenomenal things happen because the more love is, the more love is, the more energy of expansion is permitted, the more it expands to new opportunities.
All of a sudden, being in the job that currently stinks or stunk up until now. Playing this mental game, the brain is the game partner, playing this mental game with your brain, challenging it to show up in the most loving way. A client comes in and says, “You are somebody that I have been hoping to meet here. Would you consider changing careers?” I challenge you to do that. It has happened so often for so many of our clients that we could probably write volumes of books. It sounds simple, it sounds unrealistic, and yet it is the truest principle I have witnessed in over two decades.
Thank you. Let us take it to this audience’s question. I am going to play with it a little bit to make sure I understand it and that audiences can understand it. We are taking this audience’s question. They are unhappy, it seems chiefly at work, but that probably percolates through the rest of their life because we spend so much time at work. They are feeling as though they hate the job. They do not want the lifestyle change, or I do not know that they do not want it, but they know it would make a big lifestyle change.
They are concerned that the partner is going to be upset by this and that the parents are definitely going to be incensed by this. Not the first time I have heard that one. What you are saying, if I hear you right, is to go into work, find even microscopic little elements to love about the job. Whether it is the research, whether it is somebody at the desk next to you, whether it is the coffee breaks, whatever it might be, the view outside the window. Find something you love, breathe into the love, pay attention to what you notice and love, rather than what we tend to do as humans, we tend to notice the faults and the things we do not like.
Our energies are bleeding, I call it leading into those areas. You are saying to this person, when you start, you are actually shifting your energy if we are looking at energy work. Instead of being darker and down and suppressed, you are breathing into lightness, you are noticing lightness, you are noticing joy. It might be a bird that comes and sits outside the window, whatever it might be. It might be a boss that you really like. The more you do that, the more your energy is going to shift.
This is what I was talking about earlier in physics. It is entropy. You are shifting, you are creating more, there is a little more chaos, a little more change. Because you are getting ignited and you are opening up, most of us are not drawn toward darkness and people who are contracted. We are drawn to people who are expansive and open and breathing into their light, which is something that is available to all of us, not just some of us. You are saying that something is going to happen energetically with this person.
As you said, it might be someone coming into the office and saying, “Wait, would you like to try this tea? Would you like to maybe hire you for this?” It might be someone out on the street, or someone who is sitting on a park bench, taking a break, who knows. By the way, I agree with you 100%. I believe that whatever we call it, the universe forces nature, whatever it is, they want us to be our highest and best selves. They want us to be a force of love. I love how you just say the greatest is love. I believe that too, because love is really powerful.
We see how much love carries us forward and opens life, and how much hatred and fear work in the opposite way. You are saying to this individual and to all of our audiences, please again push back if I get your perspective off. As long as you are doing little acts of love for yourself, one step at a time, loving, noticing the love, breathing into the love, the universe or whatever the forces are out there are going to slowly shift your world and bring opportunities to you that you would not see or might not come your way when you are closed down and shut down. How did I do?
Absolutely. I just think that is a beautiful decoding. Our brain is such a hungry little organ that likes things regurgitated in depth. You have such a phenomenal way to nourish the brain all the way to its truth. I am enjoying this. I am enjoying it thoroughly. I want what is coming through from me to continue the conversation in this direction, and really, as I am tuning in to the deepest desire to give the listener the answer. I want to talk about the concept of compromise, because what I am hearing in that question is compromising with the wrong thing. I love the word compromise.
If you break it down, it is actually spelled as com, and then promise. Com stands for common or communal. The original purpose of compromising is so that everybody in a community will be a part of a promise of the best outcome, and that if the outcome is skewed in any direction, then it is not an ideal, most loving compromise. Just redefining that, I would say what I have heard in that question was so many low-frequency compromises. If you are afraid to disappoint your partner and your parents, is the fear of disappointment the best level of compromise you want in your family?
Do you want to express your heart’s desire and your passion and compromise at a higher level? Is that even a possibility? Just questions, no answers. No solutions. If you are compromising, if you really know what it is that you want and you do not want to lose the lifestyle, which one is more important? If lifestyle is more important than what you feel is the soul’s purpose, it probably is not quite the soul’s purpose. If you are compromising something that you feel is greater for something that you feel is lower, it is not a worthy compromise. That is just something to think about.
As you are learning to fall in love with yourself deeper, which means hearing all your fears and hearing all of your limitations and hearing the internal confusion and doubt and not judging it and not fixing it, but sending love to it. That is what loving yourself is. It’s not, I do find healing work, but healing is not how do I fix this, how do I go from this to this. Healing is how do I love myself as who I am so fully and completely that I no longer need to limit myself through this particular pattern?
It is safer for me to show up more as who I am. We are still compromising. We are just compromising with a sacred, radiant, bigger part of who we are. That is what came in for me while we’re talking about love and loving and answering the question. I would just keep asking more questions as an audience member. What am I compromising? Why am I compromising? What is the highest compromise that would serve me and everyone in the family in the best way? There is always an answer.
There is no way to keep an appointment with what truly matters in your life without breaking an appointment with expectations—and often in the form of disappointing others. Share on X
Dr. Victoria, thank you so much. I want to go back to the compromise. I love the ideology of words. As voracious as I am for doing this with words, I have never thought of compromise in its origins, many other words, but not that one. I got chills when you were explaining it because just breaking down that word into community and promise, that alone is so powerful because it goes back to what you were saying originally. When we are doing what is right for the self in a deep act of love, I am not talking about being selfish.
I am talking about self-awareness and doing truly what the self is calling for. We cannot help but do the best for the world. That is that community, whether it is a community of 10 or 10,000 or a hundred thousand, when we are our best selves, not our most selfish selves, when we are our best selves following our highest calling. Audiences, I will use myself as an example. In my former life, when I was doing what I was raised to do, I was a good servant. I really was. I was like the best servant out there. I was so diligent and faithful and did a lot for a lot of other people.
My soul was starving. I was starving in some ways, emotionally, psychologically, mentally, and even physically, I would say. Yet, when I broke free of the mold, which upset a lot of people in my life in many significant ways, it was scary. It actually led me to doctoral school, which was my yearning for so long. It was not an easy journey. It was an intensely difficult, painful journey that I really would not want to go through ever again, but I would do it again if it meant being true to my soul. The world opened up. Step by step, the more I trusted, the more I loved, the more I took one.
Little things would happen that I just needed at that time, financially, when I was scraping by, and against me, something else would happen. It is like, “What is this?” That is what led me to write my dissertation to do qualitative and quantitative research on what you were talking about, which is fear and the power of fear. It is what led me to my first book, Joy from Fear. That is how that book got written. The tiny bits of me in that book, but definitely it was a book about what you are talking about. When you realize that fear can hold you back, keep you pinned in a life that is not your highest calling.

When you learn to differentiate between what I call constructive fear, which is a fear that says, “Be careful, that dog might bite you. They bit the neighbor as well.” That is constructive fear. Most of our other fears are destructive. They hold us back. As you say, and I love this is going to feed into another piece you said, “Do not try and extinguish this fear, do not try and hate it or be mad at it.” Breathe love into it. Breathe love into your life and allow yourself to find your path.
Sure, you might disappoint other people and other people who are used to you being a servant, or a servant to their needs or to their expectations, and they may get mad at you. They may disown you. Who knows what they are going to do? That is their path. It is not your path. The people who really love you, who are similarly breathing into love, are going to have your back. There may be only 1 or 2 of those left, but that is okay. I would rather have people in my life who have my back, one or two, and who are breathing into their love and their calling than 5 million people who only want me to be doing what they want me to be doing.
That, Dr. Victoria, I think is probably, I know it is something I see throughout my practice, day in and day out, helping people break these chains. What do you think about when we take it back to this audience, and we think about how they may suffer the intense disappointment of their parents? Maybe the husband says, “If you do this, I want a divorce.” Who knows what will happen? How do you advise someone if their compromise tells them I must follow my path?
I do not want to interrupt you. Did you finish?
I was just going to say, let us say this person is really terrified that they won’t have a home or won’t be able to make ends meet. What would you say about these pragmatic things, the survival instincts that are getting in the way of the soul’s calling? What would you say?
I would first say it is absolutely normal. If you did not feel it, I would be really concerned. Congratulations on being so beautifully, powerfully normal and wired for greatness. That would be the first thing. Nothing is wrong with you. That would be my first thing. For some reason, I do not normally play with words. There is something in your field that makes me ponder and come up with these. We will deepen it that way. If you look at the word disappointment, it is just missing an appointment, by the way. Disappointing is missing an appointment.
You have to decide whose appointments you are going to keep. In the time-space continuum and quantum mechanics, in this physical body, I am having an appointment with Dr. Carla right now, which means I am disappointing the other 8 million people on this earth. I am at a point of disappointing 8 billion people because I am not keeping my appointment with them. I chose to keep my appointment with Dr. Carla because I believe our meeting here now is an appointment with destiny. Both of us have chosen an appointment with destiny.
There is no way to keep an appointment with what matters without breaking an appointment, and often in the form of disappointment with everything else. Not some things, not some people. Some people hide their disappointment better than others. Some people process it louder through hysterics. That is beautiful because the higher the upset, the more you are setting them up. When you upset somebody, you are setting them up. You are giving them the possibility to see a new reality. We do not down-set people, we upset them.
When they are disappointed, they are upset. You go like, “Not only am I breaking through my reality, I am offering that path of freedom for them.” Is it cozy? No. Is it comfortable? Of course not. To say that there is a gentle, peaceful way of ignoring people’s discomfort would be a lie. We are not here to lie, we are to say their reaction to you keeping your appointment with your destiny. When they are disappointed, validate their feeling and say, “I know how much you care, and I know this must be so scary for you. It is almost as scary for me. Do you want to do it together?”
That is my best comeback. Do you want to do it together? In 2013, I had 28 million dollars pending in real estate as the number one agent in the US and Canada. Twenty-eight million dollars in profit pending in the middle of the night. I am a spiritual person. I follow the inner knowing relentlessly. Reluctantly, relentlessly, reluctantly, because you do not want to say goodbye to all the money, yet in the middle of the night, I know the time has come to open my company. I come to my husband, who just retired, not in the best of circumstances, and I say, “Honey, I am going to open this new company.”
He says, “What about all the sales? Aren’t you going to close all the deals and have the money?” I say, “No, somehow timing is important. I am just going to give it to the broker and walk away.” Let me tell you, in the following weeks, I have learned every single week, every single way, to eat rice, beans, and onions, because that is all we could afford for a while. I have got to tell you, those were the best rice, beans, and onions I have ever had in my life, because they tasted like freedom. Is your golden castle with your luxury meal just a fancy prison meal?
Would you like to join freedom and have rice and beans? Email me. I’ll tell you how to fix them in every way. It is not a theory. It is not beautiful, I think you should do it, and I preach it. It is something I live. I breathe, and I lead, and I see thousands of our clients do that. You are scared. Great. It is normal. You think people will be disappointed. You bet you they will be. Congratulations. All of it is normal. It is just that it can no longer be your norm. You are ready for a new norm. You are ready to keep an appointment with your destiny, which means disappointing many people along the way. Congrats.
When you upset somebody by choosing your path, you are actually setting them up by offering them a brand new path of freedom. Share on XI am just a bit speechless because what you are saying is so beautiful. I love how you phrased the rice, beans, and onions tasted like freedom. I remember when I broke chains, the baked potatoes were really, really good. You could get a 10-pound bag for $5. They were the best baked potatoes in the world. They never tasted like poverty to me. They tasted like love. They tasted like the best comfort food in the world. I think that, again, another similarity between us is that I just love how you are saying that it’s good for you. If you are afraid, good for you.
If you are disappointing other people while following your true calling, good for you, because that is what the universe needs. I remember ages ago working with someone who was three-quarters of the way through medical school. They came to me and said, “Please, I am not happy. I have all of these student loans, all of these debts. I am going to freak out my family because this is what is going to make them so proud of me.” I looked at that person and said, “What is your highest calling?” They said, “I do not know yet, but I know it is not this.”
It might be this or that. I said, “The world does not need one more unhappy doctor. The world does not need that.” There are enough unhappy doctors out there who misdiagnose and drop the ball because they are just not happy. I said, “Listen to your soul.” I did not have the words that you have. I wish I had those words now, but he still understood my support and the idea of having the strength to follow passion and that deep inner knowing that might be a little bit foggy. It can be a little foggy, like you might not know yet. This person did leave their medical school.
They ended up, and I saw them for a while as they went through the adventure, the journey, the pain. Which is another thing you said, you said something, excuse my paraphrase, that you follow your passion, your calling, relentlessly and sometimes reluctantly. I love that because it is so true. Sometimes, that true calling, the relentlessness, and the reluctance, can all exist because you can go through that dark night of the soul.
You go through those times, and you are like, “What did I do?” I do not want to see another potato. I do not want to see another rice and bean, but yet I do. If it means that I am living this other way, no, I will take rice, beans, potatoes, spinach for the rest of my life. That is totally fine. It is really funny how when you are eating food, literal food, and you do not have love in your life, it just does not taste very good.
Life does not taste very good. When you are living your passion, living your soul calling, life definitely feels much better from morning until night. My goodness, Dr. Victoria, you are just giving so much wealth and beauty to our audiences and to me. I am just feeling so joyful and so happy right now. Thank you for that. Are there any other pieces to this? I know there is a lot, but are there any other pieces that you would want our audiences to really focus on?
If you give me one second, I am going to grab something that is right here in my office.
Yes, please.
I brought this guy from China with me. I was speaking in China, and I found this little guy. If you are tuning in, I will describe him holding a little plastic figurine of a little monk with a little Buddhist thing on his forehead. He is peacefully meditating, and on his lap, he is holding a pile of s***, the prime delivered s***. Sorry. His name is Shitshine. I have named this little guy Shitshine. The reason he is always by my side, he is just a beautiful reminder that your life can have piles, little ones or big ones, of unnecessary, unwanted things in life.
If you are waiting for it to leave so that you can shine, you are preventing yourself from living a joyful, purposeful life. Whatever is in your lap right now, at this very moment, permit yourself to shine regardless. Regardless, do not wait for it to end. Do not wait for it to move. Just say, “It is there, and I am above it, I am beyond it.” If your brain says it is too late or it is not possible, remind yourself that it is never too late, and it is always possible. Today, what is the one step I can take to make it more probable? Life is full of possibilities. Our job is to increase the probability.
Ask yourself, what is it that I really want? What if it were possible for me? What is the one tiny step I can do today that will make it more probable? Just every day, one tiny step and pouring love into the little pile in your lap and in the laps of others. That would be my last little drop of encouragement. Be like Shitshine.
Dr. Victoria, that is so beautiful. It is making me think of it, because I enjoyed seeing the beautiful little monk sitting there so peacefully with this pile of poop in his lap, all nice and swirled like chocolate ice cream. What came to my mind is, “Yeah, we do get poop in our lives sometimes every day.” We definitely have it in our lives every day. It is part of life. Sometimes we get it in our lap, and we want to get rid of it. We want to throw it off and say, “No, my life should not have any crap in it.”
The truth is, and I am reminded of this with my garden, I go, and I buy poop to put in my garden. Poop, when we look at it right and use it in the correct way, can become a really good fertilizer. If we are too busy trying to get rid of it, rather than, as you say, breathe into it, see if there is any possible fertilization in there, like what is this mess? What is this poop bringing in me, bringing to me? I have to figure it out. Something happened in my personal life, and I am wrestling with it a bit. There has got to be a puddle.
There is some poop right here. I have to figure out that there is something in here that is meant to help me grow. That is an uncomfortable place to be, especially as a psychotherapist. I want the answer. I want to know. It is like, “Just sit with the poop, let it be there. Your psyche will help you figure it out. Your soul will help you figure it out. “As long as you are breathing love into it. That is sometimes the hardest part of all, Dr. Victoria, for me, and probably for most of us, is remembering to breathe the love into it.
It is easy to breathe in the hatred, the judgment, the negativity. It is harder to breathe into it with love. When we do that, poop has a way of turning into fertilizer. We will see, to be determined. That is my general experience. The more we resonate at a higher level and do not go to the darkness, but instead go to the light and the love, the more we tend to find the right path overall. My goodness, Dr. Victoria, you are just a wealth of beautiful energy, joy, and wisdom. Where can our audiences find you?
